Romance of the Rose

I'm posting this photo to remind me how great my roses *used* to look.

The roses don't look like this now. They are swarming with Japanese beetles. Every year I swear I will toss them by the side of the road and swear off roses forever. Or replace them with one of those new disease-resistant "knockout" varieties. Has anyone planted these?

My coworker planted the knockouts and loves them. Can you give us an update on the urban tumbler sometime?

I haven't planted the Knockouts, but suspect the Japanese beetles would still eat them, disease resistant or not.

I have all antique/heirloom roses down here on the coast - and fortunately, we don't have the japanese beetle problems that you guys too. No fun. I haven't tried any of the knockout varieties - but I'm with Carol - I think they'd get eaten too.

I am just North of Nashville, TN. I have knock out roses and have had aphids, japanese beetles and now have black spot fungus. Our landscaper put them in our newly built home. I thought they'd be a bit easier but the blooms are beautiful!

Mine is always the case of mildew and black spots. Like you, I keep 'killing' my roses and vowed not to grow anymore. But the moment I spot it at the nursery, just couldn't resist bringing one home.
