The Compost Caper

My neighbor piles up his yard clippings in his backyard, forming large mounds with no apparent purpose. Meanwhile, I have this fantastic urban compost tumbler, plus an old-fashioned auxiliary compost pile, to fill up. Last night I actually contemplated using the cover of darkness to steal some grass clippings. Don't worry, I have not gone totally crazy; I'm planning to knock on the door and ask permission first. I still feel a little crazy.

Better to steal them, I hear the compost is richer when ready!

I'd steal them too. But what can I say - I 'steal' bags of live oak leaves along the road in the spring, and often even drag my graduate students along for the heist. I've lectured to them about C:N ratios during these little field trips, and about how I like grass clippings missed in with the live oak leaves. They think I'm nuts, but they'll still go with me to get them!

OK, I plead the fifth now that I've "outed" myself in the mainstream media this week!
